the quarter attacked, the community forced to ransom itself

Anti-Jewish riots break out in Shiraz: the neighborhood is attacked and the community forced to buy its safety.

The Jews of Persia hold a status of toleration whose conditions had grown harsher over the century, with dress codes, contact prohibitions, and ritual impurity rules that confined them. Shiraz would experience further riots, and the Alliance israélite universelle would open schools there in the following years — education being considered at the time the only available lever where diplomatic recourse was weak.
