Pogrom of Barforush
1867·Barforush (Perse)
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
the community attacked after an accusation made from the pulpit, houses looted and synagogue desecrated
The community of Barforush, in Mazandaran, was attacked after an accusation had been launched from the pulpits. Houses were looted, the synagogue desecrated: the riot followed the pattern that Jewish communities in Persia knew well, where the suspicion of ritual impurity served as a pretext.
The Alliance israélite universelle, which was then collecting complaints from the East, brought the account to Paris and intervened with the Persian authorities. These efforts did not prevent violence from recurring in the province until the end of the century.
