The followers of Jacob Frank, who claimed to be the successors of Sabbataï Tsevi and had broken with rabbinical Judaism, brought before ecclesiastical courts a charge of ritual murder against the community of Jampol, in Podolia. It was the first time such an accusation came from within, brought by Jews against other Jews.
Notable figures were imprisoned and interrogated. The affair paved the way for the public disputations that the Frankists would subsequently obtain from the Church, in which they committed to maintaining before the rabbis that the Talmud prescribed the use of Christian blood. The council of the Four Lands sent an emissary to Rome to secure a refutation.
