At Ostropol, the community was massacred; the kabbalist Samson of Ostropol perished in the synagogue with his companions, clothed in their burial shrouds, according to the tradition that holds he had foretold the disaster.
Samson of Ostropol taught a kabbalah of imminent salvation and was said to receive revelations from a celestial maggid. His death, as recounted by the chroniclers, became one of the founding narratives of the Memory of the uprising and fed the messianic expectation that would soon erupt with Sabbataï Tsevi.
