Narol was taken and its community massacred. The town, in Red Ruthenia, lay on the path of the Cossack advance westward.
The uprising reshaped the map of European Judaism. Before it, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was home to the largest Jewish population in the world, organized into a Council of Four Lands that apportioned taxes and administered justice. After it, this world was shattered, debt-ridden, and a portion of its vital forces had moved westward — to Amsterdam, Hamburg, and the communities of Germany.
