expulsion from all the Papal States, except Rome and Ancona

Through the bull *Hebraeorum gens*, Pius V ordered the Jews to leave all the Papal States, with the exception of Rome and Ancona, whose communities were maintained — the first because it served as a witness to Christian expectation, the second because its port thrived on trade with the Levant.

The measure struck ancient communities in Umbria, Latium, and the Marches, and the Jewish population of the Papal State was henceforth concentrated in two ghettos. The Comtat Venaissin, another papal territory, operated under its own regime: Jews remained there, confined to the *carrières* of Carpentras, Cavaillon, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, and Avignon.
