The community of Wesel, at the confluence of the Lippe and the Rhine, was destroyed during the Black Death.

The name of the city should not be confused with that of Oberwesel, downstream on the Middle Rhine: two distinct communities, destroyed in the same year.

The community, settled near the port, lent money to Rhine boatmen; it appears in the lists of martyrs alongside its neighbors in the lower valley.
