The community of Soest was destroyed during the Black Death.

A Hanseatic town and one of the wealthiest in Westphalia, Soest possessed a renowned municipal law that was copied throughout the region; that law did not protect its Jews.

The community lived in the street that still bears the mark of its name, and lent to cloth merchants; the town had no organized Jewish life again until the modern era.
