The community destroyed

The community of Eschwege, on the Werra, was destroyed during the Black Death.

Judaism reconstituted itself there in the following centuries, and Eschwege counted, in the modern era, one of the most resilient rural communities in Hesse.

The community lived from lending to the cloth merchants and peasants of the Werra valley; its houses were seized after the massacre, and it took two generations before a Jewish community could form there again.
