The community of Aix-la-Chapelle was destroyed during the Black Death.

The city where the kings of Germany were crowned held its Jews from the imperial chamber; their killing was covered by the letters that Charles IV had granted in advance to the cities.

The community lived near the market, under the nominal protection of the chapter of the palatine chapel; it reconstituted itself only very slowly.
