First accusation of host desecration

the community burned alive on the site known since as « Judenberg »
It is at Beelitz, in the march of Brandenburg, that there first appears the accusation that would compound that of ritual murder: the desecration of the host. It was claimed that the Jews had purchased a consecrated host in order to pierce it, and that it had bled.
The community was burned on a nearby hill, which local usage has since called the *Judenberg*. No investigation followed.
The accusation had this convenient quality: it required neither a body nor a missing person — a missing host and a rumor were enough. It would spread throughout the Empire and as far as Poland, and would serve as the foundation for pilgrimage sites that sometimes survived into the twentieth century.
