The castle of Altenahr, in the Ahr valley, served as a last refuge for part of the Jewish community of Cologne. They were there overtaken and put to death, or took their own lives before being captured.

The chronicle of Salomon bar Siméon, the most detailed of the three Hebrew accounts of those months, follows the refugees from refuge to refuge and records for each the sequence of events. Altenahr appears among the last: when it falls, the community of Cologne has ceased to exist.
