Verses
Gn 18,1–22,24
Haftara
2 R 4,1–37

Two virtues that tradition has never ceased to invoke are at issue here. The welcome of the three visitors becomes the model of hospitality, hakhnassat orhim, which communities in North Africa and Eastern Europe will institutionalize in confraternities. And Abraham disputes God's justice regarding Sodome: contestation in the name of law enters the patrimony. The binding of Isaac, finally, is read each Rosh ha-Shana — a text that Memory has never managed to pacify.
