1 R 1,1–31

Abraham purchases a tomb and has the price recorded before witnesses: the first legal act in the text concerns a burial. The memory of the dead precedes the possession of land, and the cave of Makhpéla will remain the oldest claimed place of memory. The section then recounts how a wife is sought from among the relatives remaining in Harran: genealogy is constructed through choices of alliance, not by chance.
