« Go forth from your country, from your kindred » : Judaism begins with a departure, and this is why the Memory of exile is consubstantial to it rather than accidental. The promise made to Abraham is twofold, a descendance and a land, and it will be reckoned in generations. Circumcision inscribes the covenant in the body and is transmitted from father to son — the first act of hereditary transmission of the text.
