The Shema Israël is here, with the order to repeat these words to children, sitting, walking, lying down: transmission is prescribed as a daily practice, not as a ceremony. It is the phrase that generations have spoken as their last. The haftara, "Console, console my people," inaugurates the seven weeks of consolation after the 9th of Av.
