Devarim

Moses recounts forty years before the generation about to enter.

Hebrew name
דְּבָרִים
Book
Deuteronomy
Verses
Dt 1,1–3,22
Haftara
Is 1,1–27

The book is a farewell discourse that tells people what they did not live through: the generation born in the desert receives the history of its parents. It is the first staging of a transmission to non-witnessing heirs — the exact situation of all family memory. The narrative is reorganized, failures are recalled in it, the tone is that of a bequest.
