The breastplate of the high priest bears twelve stones engraved with the names of the tribes: the priest enters the sanctuary carrying upon himself the list of all the people. This is an image of what a register does — to name each one so that no one is missing. The priesthood becomes here hereditary, attached to the descent of Aaron, and this kohen lineage is transmitted still today in families.
