A portable sanctuary, designed to be carried: the first holy place of Judaism is mobile, and this portability anticipates the entire history of communities that will carry their scrolls. The donations are voluntary, "from every man whose heart is inclined"—the model of community funding by subscription, which the registers of synagogues in the Maghreb and Europe will maintain for centuries.
