After Revelation, law — and a law comparable to that of its time, of which the Code of Hammurabi offers the clearest parallel. The difference lies in the motivations: "for you were strangers in Egypt." The law does not rest on the order of the world but on a Memory of oppression, and it is this Memory that grounds the protection of the stranger, the widow, the orphan.
