Ki Tissa

The census, the golden calf, the tablets broken and remade.

Hebrew name

Book
Exodus
Verses
Ex 30,11–34,35
Haftara
1 R 18,1–39

The section opens with a counting made by half-shekels rather than by head count — people are not counted directly. Then comes the golden calf, and collective fault. What follows is essential: the tablets are remade. Tradition will keep the debris of the first ones in the ark, alongside the second ones. Nothing in Jewish memory compels erasing failure in order to continue.
