This is where all Jewish genealogy begins. The section does not merely recount origins: it establishes the very form of memory, the list of generations, this "these are the generations" that will return as a framework from one end of the Bible to the other. A single man is its source, from which the Talmud will draw that no one can claim to be of better blood than another. The Hebrew calendar still counts its years from this point.
