The book opens with a counting by paternal families, tribe by tribe: the oldest genealogical census in the corpus, and the model for all the registers that will follow. Each is situated by his house of origin, without exception. The idea that a people knows itself by counting itself and naming its filiations is born here — it is precisely the gesture that a genealogical database prolongs.
