York, a medieval city of England, is sadly famous in Jewish history for the massacre of 1190: during the Third Crusade, rioters forced the Jewish community to take refuge in Clifford's Tower, where the survivors either killed themselves or were slain. This event, documented by the chronicler William of Newburgh, is one of the major tragedies of the medieval community of England.
