Né à Gibraltar dans une lignée de rabbins de Tétouan émigrés après un pogrom, il étudia la médecine en Italie, dirigea une yeshiva à Gibraltar puis fut grand rabbin de Corfou (1831). Précurseur du sionisme religieux, il fut le mentor de Yehuda Alkalai et monta en Terre d'Israël en 1852.
