Chess master born in 1838 in Suwalki, Russian Poland, died in Paris on September 25th, 1902. Refugee in Paris in 1864 after the Polish insurrection, he devoted himself to chess and established himself in several international tournaments, notably in Baden in 1870 and in Vienna in 1873, before receiving the brilliancy prize of the London tournament of 1883 for a game against Steinitz. He founded in Paris the Chess Circle and published a work on the Paris tournament of 1900.

Maître d'échecs ; né en 1838 à Suwalki, Pologne russe ; mort à Paris le 25 septembre 1902. Après la dernière révolution polonaise, il s'enfuit à Paris (1864), où il se consacra à l'étude du jeu et devint si rapidement compétent en la matière que, après l'écoulement d'une année, il remporta le premier prix dans un tournoi tenu au Café de la Régence, Paris. Au Tournier du Prix de l'Empéreur, tenu dans la même ville en 1867, il remporta 18 parties et en perdit 6, et au Tournoi International des Maîtres à Baden en 1870, il en remporta 13 et en perdit 7. En 1873, il remporta le quatrième prix au Tournoi International de Vienne. Dans un match mémorable avec Zuckertort au St. George's Chess Club, Londres, en 1880, il en perdit 7, en remporta 1 et fit 11 nulles. Au Tournoi de Londres de 1883, il reçut le prix de la brillance pour une partie contre Steinitz.

À Paris, Rosenthal fonda le Cercle des Échecs, où il donna des exhibitions de jeu à l'aveugle. Il contribua des articles d'échecs à « La Revue des Jeux et des Arts » et à « La Stratégie », et édita un volume sur le Tournoi de Paris de 1900.
