Austrian poetess born in Vienna on December 30, 1814, died in Baden, near Vienna, on July 5, 1894. Orphaned of her father very young and forced to earn her living, she first taught in Russian Poland and then became in 1843 lady's companion to Princess Marianne Schwarzenberg, until the latter's death in 1848, before traveling three years in Paris and Berlin and settling permanently in Vienna in 1852. Her collections of verses, including « Gedichte » (1841) and « Romancero » (1845), were much read at the end of the 19th century.

Poétesse autrichienne ; née à Vienne le 30 décembre 1814 ; morte à Baden, près de Vienne, le 5 juillet 1894. Son père, médecin, décéda quand elle était très jeune ; et, la famille se trouvant dans une situation financière très difficile, Betty Paoli fut contrainte de gagner elle-même sa vie. Pendant quelque temps, elle subvint à ses besoins en travaillant comme maître de langues en Pologne russe, puis, revenant à Vienne, elle devint en 1843 compagne de la princesse Marianne Schwarzenberg, fonction qu'elle occupa jusqu'à la mort de cette dernière en 1848. Les trois années suivantes, elle les passa en voyage, visitant Paris et Berlin, et en 1852 elle s'établit à nouveau à Vienne.

Les poèmes de Betty Paoli, qui témoignent d'un sentiment profond, d'une imagination féconde et d'une grande puissance de représentation, jouirent d'une large lecture vers la fin du dix-neuvième siècle.
