Benjamin Franklin Jonas, lawyer, soldier and American statesman, was born on 19 July 1834 in Williamstown, Kentucky. A graduate of the law faculty of the University of Louisiana in 1855, he fought on the Confederate side during the American Civil War in the artillery of Hood's corps, before sitting in the Louisiana legislature after 1865 and holding various elective offices, including that of State Senator and then Representative in Congress, where he chaired the Judicial Committee. United States Senator for Louisiana from 18 March 1879 to 3 March 1885, succeeding James B. Eustis, he was then appointed by President Cleveland as Inspector of the Port of New Orleans.

Avocat, soldat et homme d'État américain ; né à Williamstown, comté de Grant, Kentucky, le 19 juillet 1834. Dans sa jeunesse, il s'établit dans le comté d'Adams, Illinois, où il reçut son éducation. En 1853, il se rendit à la Nouvelle-Orléans, où il entreprit l'étude du droit, en obtenant son diplôme de la faculté de droit de l'Université de Louisiane en 1855. Tout au long de la Guerre de Sécession, Jonas combattit du côté confédéré, d'abord comme simple soldat d'artillerie, puis comme adjudant d'artillerie faisant fonction, dans le corps d'Hood de l'Armée du Tennessee.

De 1865 jusqu'à l'achèvement de la Reconstruction, Jonas fut membre de la législature de Louisiane ; et à la Convention nationale démocrate de 1868, il fut président de la délégation de Louisiane. Jonas était le candidat démocrate en 1872 pour la charge de lieutenant-gouverneur de Louisiane, mais il démissionna en faveur du candidat de la Fusion. La même année, il fut élu sénateur d'État.

En 1874, Jonas fut élu à la charge de procureur de la ville de la Nouvelle-Orléans, et fut réélu en 1876. Cette année-là, il devint membre de la Chambre nationale des représentants, servant jusqu'à la fin de la session de 1877. Au Congrès, Jonas était président du comité judiciaire. Pendant cette période, il fut le représentant au comité national démocrate de son propre État. Du 18 mars 1879 au 3 mars 1885, Jonas fut sénateur des États-Unis pour la Louisiane, en succession à James B. Eustis. À l'expiration de son mandat, le Président Cleveland le nomma inspecteur du port de la Nouvelle-Orléans.
