Ses contemporains le considéraient comme un grand talmudiste, bien qu'il ne semble avoir rien écrit. Une controverse l'opposa à l'un de ses élèves, Baruch, et se conclut par l'excommunication de ce dernier, confirmée par Salomon ben Adret malgré les protestations de plusieurs rabbins qui le soutenaient.
