Ḥayyim (Haïm) Benchimol, of Tangier, son of Abraham Benchimol — dragoman of the French consulate, the host of Eugène Delacroix in 1832 — and of Saada Sicsu, whom the painter depicted that year with their daughter Préciada. Husband of Donna Toledano (marriage in 1856). Interpreter and dragoman of the French legation like his father, protégé and, according to several sources, first Moroccan naturalized as French; Legion of Honor in 1884. Banker, he directed from 1881 onward the Tangier agency of the Transatlantic Bank, which became an independent bank in 1889, and numbered among the wealthiest men in the city as a landowner and representative of European firms. Founder in 1867 of Morocco's first Masonic lodge, purchaser in 1888 of the Réveil du Maroc — Tangier's first newspapers defending Jews and human rights, which earned him attacks from Édouard Drumont — he presided over the committee of the Alliance israélite universelle in Tangier and in 1890 took the lead of the community Junta. In 1904, after the death of his wife, he endowed Tangier with the Benchimol hospital, initially intended for free care of Jews of modest means then open to the entire city without distinction of religion or nationality; the establishment closed in 2002 and was demolished in the night of April 2-3, 2010. His dates remain disputed: the Encyclopaedia Judaica gives 1834-1915, other sources have him born in 1826 or 1834 and dying in Marseille on August 18, 1906.
