Ḥanania, neveu de R. Josué, est un tanna du IIe siècle, nommé d'après son grand-père et formé par son oncle, dont il reçoit son surnom. Contraint par son oncle de quitter la Palestine après avoir fréquenté des sectaires à Capharnaüm, il émigre en Babylonie où il fonde une école renommée, puis, après l'échec de la révolte de Bar Kokhba, s'y réinstalle définitivement à Nehar-Peqod. Il y tente d'affranchir les écoles babyloniennes de l'autorité du Sanhédrin palestinien en fixant lui-même le calendrier des fêtes, jusqu'à ce que la levée des décrets d'Hadrien, en mars 139 ou 140, permette la réorganisation du Sanhédrin à Usha sous la présidence de Simon ben Gamliel II.
