Capernaum (Kfar Nahum), a fishing village on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, is a major site of Jewish Galilee during the Second Temple period. Its 4th–5th-century synagogue, built in white limestone and decorated with reliefs, is among the best preserved in Israel; remains of an older 1st-century synagogue have been identified beneath its foundations.
