Abraham Goldfaden est un poète yiddish et hébreu, considéré comme le fondateur du théâtre yiddish moderne ; né à Starokonstantinov, en Russie, le 12 juillet 1840, il sort diplômé de l'école rabbinique de Jitomir en 1866. Après avoir enseigné plusieurs années dans des écoles gouvernementales, il monte à Jassy, en Roumanie, en 1876, sa première pièce, jouée sur la toute première scène yiddish organisée. Il fonde ensuite une troupe qui tourne en Russie jusqu'à l'interdiction des théâtres yiddish en 1883, avant de s'installer à New York en 1887 puis de partager sa vie entre Paris et New York. Ses drames Shulamit et Bar Kochba restent ses œuvres les plus populaires.
