Militant communautaire français né à Wissembourg, en Alsace, en 1828, mort à Paris le 27 septembre 1892. Envoyé jeune à Alexandrie, il y prit conscience de la condition des juifs d'Orient, puis visita la Palestine et s'engagea dans la colonisation ; membre actif de l'Alliance israélite universelle, il assista Charles Netter à créer l'école agricole de Jaffa et succéda à Albert Cohn à la tête des œuvres Rothschild. Principal artisan des colonies Rothschild en Palestine pour les juifs fuyant les persécutions de 1882 et 1891 en Russie, il fut envoyé à Berlin organiser l'aide aux émigrants russes.
