Chef du bureau de traduction au ministère ottoman des Affaires étrangères, né à Salonique en 1845 dans une famille modeste, Da'ud Effendi Molko grandit à Constantinople où il reçoit son instruction élémentaire à l'institution Camondo. Entré au service du ministère à dix-huit ans, il devient traducteur en chef sous le règne du sultan Abdülaziz et conserve ce poste sous Abdülhamid II ; il est décoré du grand cordon de l'ordre du Nichan-i-Osmanié, du Nichan-i-Medjidié, du Nichan-i-Imtiaz, de l'ordre persan du Soleil et du Lion, et fait commandeur de la Légion d'honneur.
