Chapelain des Tuileries, à Paris, né en 1829 à Budapest, en Hongrie, mort en 1898. Après une jeunesse aventureuse, il se convertit au catholicisme à Paris sous l'influence du père carme Augustin — de son vrai nom Hermann Cohen — et entre dans l'ordre du Carmel, qu'il quittera plus tard. Prédicateur réputé, il publie en 1866 « Le Judaïsme Comme Preuve du Christianisme » et devient évêque, puis, en 1867, confesseur de l'impératrice Eugénie ; le 17 novembre 1869, il prononce le discours d'inauguration du canal de Suez.
