Poète néo-hébraïque né le 1er février 1823 à Liptó-Szent-Miklós, en Hongrie, et mort à Budapest le 9 novembre 1891, il descendait de Jair Ḥayyim Bacharach et étudia le Talmud dans sa ville natale puis à Nikolsburg et à Eisenstadt, tout en s'ouvrant, sous l'influence de la Haskala, aux sciences profanes. Installé à Budapest en 1874, il y devint deux ans plus tard trésorier de la communauté juive, charge qu'il garda jusqu'à sa mort. Poète prolifique dès l'enfance, il est surtout connu pour son œuvre hébraïque, dont des traductions de Philippson et de Lessing et des recueils comme « Zemirot ha-'Areẓ » (1868) et « Melek Ebyon » (1881).
