History
Patronyme d'une famille juive de Tanger qui, en s'installant au Brésil, crut traduire en portugais son nom arabe d'origine, Er-Rouah — le colporteur, le marchand forain —, en le confondant avec rouah, le vent en arabe et en hébreu : Bentes signifie « vents » en portugais. Au XXe siècle, ce nom très peu répandu n'était porté qu'à Tanger, par les membres de la famille revenus du Brésil. Abraham Ramiro Bentes, né en 1912 à Itaituba, en Amazonie, où son grand-père s'était installé en 1850, fit ses études primaires à l'école de l'Alliance de Tanger puis à l'École militaire de Rio de Janeiro ; retraité en 1973 avec le grade de général après quarante ans de service, il publia un dictionnaire portugais-haketia (Rio de Janeiro, 1981) et une histoire de l'installation des Juifs marocains au Brésil (1989).
