The Jews of Cairo and the modern Egyptian community

In Cairo and Alexandria, a cosmopolitan community mixing Rabbanites, Karaites and European Jews flourished under the Khedivate and then British protectorate. Bankers, merchants and scholars (Cattaoui, Mosseri, Suarès families) animated economic and cultural life. After 1948 and the Suez Crisis of 1956, nearly all of this community was forced into exile.
