Après l'accueil des expulsés d'Espagne par Bayezid II en 1492, Constantinople devint l'une des plus grandes concentrations juives du monde, mêlant Romaniotes, Séfarades et Ashkénazes. Organisée en multiples congrégations (kahalim) selon les origines, la communauté rayonna par son imprimerie et son grand rabbinat (Haham Bashi).
