Volodymyr-Volynsky (Włodzimierz Wołyński en polonais), ancienne capitale médiévale de Volhynie, abritait une communauté juive depuis le XVIe siècle au moins. Centre commercial et religieux, la ville comptait plusieurs synagogues et une vie intellectuelle développée. La Shoah emporta presque tous ses habitants juifs, massacrés en 1942.
