Varna, principal port bulgare sur la mer Noire, a abrité une communauté juive séfarade active depuis l'époque ottomane, dont le rôle dans le commerce maritime était notable. La communauté, numériquement importante, fut déportée en 1943 mais miraculeusement sauvée grâce à la résistance bulgare à la Solution finale.
