Monteux est l'une des quatre communautés juives pontificales du Comtat Venaissin (les « arba kehillot »), avec Carpentras, Cavaillon et L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Elle disposait d'une synagogue et d'une carrière (quartier juif) attestées depuis le XIVe siècle, et les Juifs y bénéficiaient de la protection papale jusqu'à leur intégration à la France en 1791.
