Gaza, port méditerranéen du sud de la Palestine, abrita une communauté juive attestée dès l'Antiquité par des sources rabbiniques et archéologiques. À l'époque hellénistique et byzantine, elle jouait un rôle commercial actif. Au XVIIe siècle, la ville fut un foyer important du sabbataïsme : Nathan de Gaza y proclama Sabbataï Tsevi comme messie en 1665.
