Bloemfontein, capitale de l'État libre d'Orange, vit sa communauté juive se constituer dès les années 1870 et s'enrichir considérablement après l'afflux d'immigrants lituaniens consécutif aux pogroms de 1881–1882. Les Juifs de Bloemfontein jouèrent un rôle actif dans le commerce et les professions libérales de la colonie boer puis de la province sud-africaine.
