Natif de Constantinople, l'auteur le plus prolifique de romans originaux en ladino (judéo-espagnol), avec des dizaines de romans et novellas (romansos). Fondateur et directeur en 1908 du périodique satirique « El Jugueton » (איל ג'וגיטון), l'un des plus durables de la presse ladino (1908-1931). Il publie en 1926 une autobiographie picaresque, « Komo Nasio Elia R. Karmona ». Son œuvre est conservée notamment dans la Sephardic Studies Collection de l'Université de Washington.
