Ashkenazi, Solomon ben Nathan

Médecin de cour du roi Sigismond II Auguste de Pologne (1548-72) et diplomate au service ottoman, né probablement vers 1520, mort en 1602. Descendant d'une famille allemande établie à Udine, en Italie, il se rend jeune à Cracovie, probablement dans le cortège de Bona, l'épouse italienne du roi, et devient par son talent premier médecin du souverain. Il s'installe ensuite à Constantinople, où il se distingue comme diplomate au service du grand vizir Mehmed Sokollu, participant aux préliminaires de paix lors de la guerre turco-vénitienne pour Chypre (1570), puis se prononçant, lors de l'élection du roi de Pologne en 1572, en faveur d'Henri d'Anjou.
