Barranquilla, principal port caribéen de la Colombie, attira à partir du XIXe siècle des immigrants juifs d'origines variées : Sépharades des Caraïbes, Juifs ottomans (de Syrie et du Liban) et Ashkénazes d'Europe orientale. Actifs dans le commerce, le textile et l'industrie, ces immigrants fondèrent des institutions communautaires solides ; la ville abrita l'une des plus dynamiques communautés juives de Colombie au XXe siècle.
