Station estivale du Mont-Liban, Aley était fréquentée par des familles juives aisées de Beyrouth cherchant à fuir la chaleur côtière à l'époque ottomane tardive et sous le Mandat français. Il s'agissait davantage d'une résidence saisonnière que d'une communauté permanente.
