Fils de Nathan Mayer Rothschild, fondateur de la branche britannique. Élu à la Chambre des communes pour la City de Londres dès 1847, il devint le 26 juillet 1858 le premier juif pratiquant à siéger au Parlement britannique, en prêtant serment tête couverte et en substituant « so help me, Jehovah » à la formule chrétienne.
